Addy sighs and rubs her face. None of us mention the smudge of Eden’s blood her fingertips leave behind on her cheek.

‘We’ll split up into two groups.’ She suggests. ‘A three and a two. Then none of us will be alone if they’re still here.’

I want to object. To say that we should all stay together. But the idea of the cabin staying so fucking dark makes me feel like my chest is constricting. And at least I won’t be alone as we all search for the fuse box.

It’s a shame that Air B&B doesn’t come with a section for “if you find yourself in a life and death situation, where an intruder finds their way inside and kills your friend, follow these steps. Oh, and if the power goes out, this is exactly where to find the fuse box and get the power back up.” But that would be far too easy, wouldn’t it?

Brooklyn practically fuses herself to my hip. Addy helps Quinn to her feet, twining their arms together. Niamh hovers. A loner out at sea, grappling which lifeboat to cling to. Addy loses patience and makes the decision for her.

‘Niamh, you go with Harper and Brooklyn. You three can search the second floor, since it’s bigger. Me and Quinn will look down here.’

‘She just doesn’t want to deal with Niamh’s meltdown.’ Brooklyn whispers beside me. I can’t argue with that. It’s exactly what she’s doing and I hate her for it.

‘The sooner we get this over with the better.’ I whisper back.

As if reading my thoughts, Niamh walks over to join us and huffs impatiently, ‘let’s get this over and done with.’ She snaps.

As we walk up the dark cold stairway, Niamh’s tough girl act slips. She clings to the back of my shirt like it’s her life line. Brooklyn walks carefully up the stairs in front of me, lighting the way with her torch. We barely breathe as we walk along the hall.

I wonder, as we pass the closed door of Eden’s room, whether Addy purposefully assigned us to this floor because she didn’t want to be anywhere near the body of our dead friend. That, or she’s keeping Quinn away from it, scared that the mere sight of the old wooden door will have Quinn declining back into catatonia.

We search the upstairs; there’s five bedrooms and one bathroom. There’s no fuse box and there’s no intruder lurking in the dark.

When we make our way back downstairs, Quinn and Addy are already back in the lounge-cum-kitchen-cum-dining room. Quinn is sat on the sofa, shivering.

Addy has her coat on. Her boots laced.

‘It’s an outdoor generator.’ She explains. Her voice is more or less even, but her fingers tremble as she ties her laces. ‘I think I saw it around back when we were checking the back bedroom. There’s an outhouse by the old stables.’

‘You can’t go out there alone, Addy. Are you insane!?’ Niamh shrieks. ‘It’s pitch black out there.’

‘It will be pitch black in here if our phones go dead before we can make it out of this god forsaken forest.
